upper eyelids: blepharospasm
This lady suffered from blepharospasm (spontaneous and uncontrolled contractions of the eyelids) and ptosis (weakened action of the muscle that opens the lids). The most common treatment of spasms, weakening of the muscles that close the eyes with botulinum toxin (Botox, Dysport) was not effective. After extensive investigation in a neurology department, no other treatment modality seemed to be available. Through an incision in the upper eyelid the muscle that lifts the lid was shortened on both sides. Not only did this correct the sagging (ptosis), the spasms also diminished spontaneously and permanently to a minimal level.
