Upper blepharoplasty

The most common treatments on the upper eyelid are the removal of excess skin and the repositioning or removal of protruding fat.

Except for the East-Asian physical constitution, most people have a well-marked wrinkle at about three to eight millimetres from the eyelid border. The skin below this wrinkle is attached to the deeper layers. The skin above can slide and fold when the eyes are opened.

The ageing process causes the attached part of the skin to slide down and, eventually, to rest on the eyelashes. When this weight becomes too heavy a tired feeling and even visual disturbance may ensue.

The surgical incisions are made in and above the natural wrinkle. The operations is slightly more complex in case the skin below the incision line has to be surgically attached to the deeper tissues.

Although this operation is often performed to treat functional problems, cover by Belgian public health care is limited to very advanced cases and subject to strict criteria.

The first and the last images of the following animations are "before" and "after" pictures. The transition has been rendered digitally. After an upper eyelid correction the face frequently looks more relaxed, as the eyebrows do not need to be raised any more to see properly.

At times, sagging of the eyebrows contributes significantly to the apparent skin excess on the upper eyelids. In such case an eyebrow-lift with suspension sutures or by direct skin excision can be performed in the same operative session.

In minor cases, an eyebrow lift by induction of heat under the skin ("endodermal radiofrequency", non-surgical) can be considered.
