bulbous nose - rhinophyma
The treatment of rhinophyma is completely different compared to other nose corrections. This condition is part of a skin disease (rosacea) and it develops on top of a normal nose skeleton with normal bone and cartilage. A continuous proliferation of sebaceous glands (oily sweat glands) produces a plump shape and an irregular surface. The thin blood vessels just under the skin surface are dilated. They produce a red and veiny aspect.
A dermatologist (skin specialist) has to be consulted to treat the skin condition. Once the skin proliferation is too important to be cured by drugs alone, surgical correction may be appropriate.
Under local or general anaesthesia the nasal skin is shaved. The dressing forms a protective crust, which peels of after healing which takes two to three weeks.
