Rhinophyma

Rhinophyma is a skin condition that does not affect the bone or cartilage of the nasal skeleton. A continuous proliferation of sebaceous glands (oily sweat glands) causes a plump shape and an irregular surface. The thin blood vessels just under the skin surface are dilated, which gives the skin a red and veiny aspect.

Rhinophyma is a manifestation of rosacea, a skin disease. It is wise to consult a dermatologist (skin specialist) for treatment. Once the skin proliferation is too important to be cured by drugs alone, surgical correction may be appropriate

Under local or general anaesthesia the nasal skin is shaved with radiofrequency current and a wire electrode, a laser or both. The surface of the skin regenerates over two to four weeks. Daily home nursing care is required to change the dressing.
