Capsular Contracture

Scar tissue, called "capsule" is formed around every breast implant.

If this tissue overdevelops and contracts, the breast may harden and sometimes get a balloon-like appearance. This is called "capsular contracture". In the most severe cases, the contracture causes pain.

Usually, the condition requires surgical treatment. The incision is reopened and the implant is removed together with the capsule. The patient may accept the situation without implants. Sometimes, an augmentation by lipofilling is performed as an alternative. It is possible to insert a new implant, but unfortunately the contracture may then also recur.
