Protruding ears

From the age of six to seven, prominent or protruding ears can be set back. Because surgery may influence ear growth it is rarely done at younger age. Technically, the operation can be performed as efficiently in adults as in children. In general, the best moment to have the operation is whenever the appearance becomes a psychological burden.

There are different surgical techniques. The most commonly used procedure in this practice creates or improves the fold in the ear cartilage with permanent deep sutures. The incision is made on the back of the ear so as to minimise scar visibility.

Adults generally prefer local anaesthesia, whereas general anaesthesia is recommended for children.

The effect is permanent, altough exceptionally an infected suture needs to be removed under local anaesthesia.
