When the lower eyelid loses contact with the surface of the eye whend the person is in the standing positiong, several problems arise. The eye is less well protected. Both the surface of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelid become irritated. There is an increased risk of infection. The opening of the lower tear duct cannot evacuate tears any more, leading to pronounced tearing.

There are many causes for this problem, but ageing is the most important one. Depending on the extent of the problem, the outer corner of the eyelids can be lifted and hitched up closer to the bone of the eye socket, or a small wedge of lid border is removed to tighten the lid, or both techniques are combined.

This treatment is covered by Belgian public health insurance.
